A Golden Hour lit Shoot at Dundurn Castle

Hamilton, Ontario

Engagement photos are more than just pictures; they’re a way to freeze the essence of a couple’s unique bond when it's on fire . When it comes to capturing those magical moments, location plays a huge role. That’s why Dundurn Castle in Hamilton is an absolute gem for engagement shoots. Recently, we had the pleasure of photographing a fun and spunky couple during a golden hour sunset session at this breathtaking site, and the results were nothing short of spectacular, as you will soon see for yourself!

One of the things we love about Dundurn Castle is the incredible variety of backdrops it offers, each perfect for telling a different part of a couple’s story. From the grand, stately architecture of the castle itself to the lush greenery surrounding it, the location provides endless opportunities for creative shots.

Whether you’re after a romantic, intimate portrait in the serene garden or a more dramatic, majestic shot in front of the castle’s towering facade, Dundurn Castle has something for every mood and personality.

We moved seamlessly from one spot to another, capturing everything from light-hearted, playful moments to soft, dreamy portraits. The variety of scenery made it easy to showcase the couple’s dynamic relationship and helped to create a diverse set of images that they’ll treasure forever.

One of the secrets to stunning engagement photos is the timing, and at Dundurn Castle, we recommend shooting during the golden hour—the period shortly before sunset or just after sunrise when the light is soft, warm, and flattering. On this particular shoot, we timed it perfectly to catch the golden hour glow, and the results were breathtaking.

The warm, airy tones of the light gently illuminated the couple, creating a romantic atmosphere that you can’t achieve at any other time of day. The way the sunlight filtered through the trees and cast long, soft shadows added a layer of depth and mood to every shot.

Not only does this lighting make for visually stunning photographs, but it also adds an ethereal, almost magical quality to the images. The soft, diffused light during golden hour makes even the simplest moments feel like something out of a fairytale. Whether it’s a soft gaze between the couple or a joyful laugh, the light seems to enhance every emotion, making it the perfect backdrop for capturing love.

While golden hour is undoubtedly the best time to shoot at Dundurn Castle, early morning during sunrise is another ideal option. Sunrise light is similarly soft and airy, and shooting during these early hours allows you to avoid the crowds, making it feel like you have the entire place to yourselves. It’s also an excellent time for couples who prefer a quieter, more intimate setting.

Thank you, Kate & Aaron, for being such a pleasure to shoot!
